In a global scenario of enormous changes and with ever larger sections of society demanding a new role for rural areas, the concept of “Rural Design” emerges. It envisions a new rurality not defined by contrast with urban models. Instead, it seeks to create new economic and social forms, emphasizing the unique characteristics of rural territories beyond agriculture. The concept aims to redesign rural contexts, transforming them into vibrant cultural and economic hubs of the future. This involves providing living and working spaces, attracting opportunities, and fostering new economies, particularly integrated production chains (bioeconomy).
The festival set out with an ambitious objective: to bring out the complexity of natural, cultural and economic resources that the Matese region can offer. Despite their substantial value, many of these resources remain underappreciated or underutilized. Through workshops, meetings, and cultural events, the initiative sought to enhance the region’s cultural and natural capital. These activities aimed to raise awareness, develop skills, and provide incentives and opportunities for individuals, both young and old, living in, visiting, or investing in the territory.
The event culminated in an exhibition showcasing themes related to rural design. Artists, designers, architects and researchers worldwide were invited to participate by submitting their works and projects. Selected pieces were exhibited, or made in situ, in pavilions within San Potito’s municipality and the surrounding areas.
All the activities of the Festival, from conception to execution, were inspired by the principles of sustainability, circularity, and processes enabling ecosystem and community regeneration.
