Presentation of the book “HERBARIANS OF MATESE. From the Territory to Fibre. Itineraries of Research and Regenerative Experimentation"

The book, curated by professors Margherita Labbe and Angela Vinciguerra, published by Scrive (Eugenio Gazzola, Piacenza) and printed by the Brera Academy, documents the theoretical research and experimentation on natural fibers from the Matese area, within the “Herbarians of Matese” project.

By examining both spontaneous vegetation and residues from cultivation and industrial activities, the volume describes the main fiber-rich plants found in the Matese region (but also across the entire Mediterranean area, especially in hilly areas). Many of these species have been used for centuries in the production of everyday objects, textiles, and paper artifacts, in numerous artistic traditions from different regions of the world.

Each plant is examined from multiple perspectives, not only as a botanical species but especially for its potential experimental interactions. The book narrates the technological path of each plant, with results that provide insights for further developments, not only in the field of graphic techniques. This multidisciplinary approach has been made possible thanks to the contribution of experts from various disciplines, including ethnobotany, history, art, and social sciences.
